December - Cromwell Christmas at the Races
Otago Racing Club hosts the ultimate central Otago Christmas celebration! There is plenty to keep you entertained throughout the day including fashion in the field, live entertainment and a visit from the man in red himself! Located at one of the most beautiful and scenic racecourses in New Zealand your group won't be disappointed! Many local businesses use the event for hosting staff and clients. Packages can be viewed at Wingatui.co.nz. The key races are the Queenstown Cup, sponsored for many years by AWS Legal and the Wanaka Cup.
The Famous Cromwell Races - March
Regarded by many as the best picnic meeting in the country, this event is actually much more than that as it is a feature license and also attracts quality racing. The key race is the Cromwell Cup. It is now part of a two day Central Otago circuit, as neighbouring track Omakau race on the Friday prior giving trainers the opportunity to run their horses twice.
The day is very much focussed on family entertainment and the club has staged many novelty events over the past few years including Man v Horse, tug of wars and sheep racing. There is always a hotly contested fashions on the field contest. Free kids entertainment and live music is always part of the show. The club promotes this meeting as the “Famous” Cromwell Races.
