Choosing  a name for your horse

Often a hotly debated topic between owners, naming a horse can be one of the most creative and fun parts of being an owner. Most owners have particular ways or preferences for selecting a name.

One of the more popular methods of creating a name is by combining the names of the sire and the dam e.g.

Crafty Cowgirl - by Mastercraftsman from Crystalthecowgirl
Ali Magee - by Alamosa from Fibber Magee
Bound to keep her - Keeper from Heavenly Bound

Rules for naming your horse

There are some rules to bear in mind when naming your horse:

  • Names must be no longer than 18 characters, including the spaces
  • Don't apply for names whose spelling or pronunciation is similar to names already registered
  • A name cannot be reused until 15 years has passed since the foaling of a similar named horse
  • Names for broodmares cannot be used until 12 years has passed since that name last appeared in the Stud Book
  • Names of winners of Group One races are protected
  • Names of stallions cannot be used until 15 years has passed since they last appeared in a studbook.

Use this name search facility to see if your prospective name is already in use. This search does not check similar spelling or similar sounding names, and should be used as a guide only. All name applications are subject to approval by NZTR.

Registering your horse's name

Before your horse can race you must complete a Name Registration Application form. You must include details for all legal owners. You should also list the names you have selected in order of preference, together with other information about the horse such as breeding, age and the brands and markings that appear on the horse. It costs $120.00 (including GST) to register your horse's name.
