The core business of Breaking and Pre-training has been expanded into preparing two year olds for the Ready to Run drafts, and this has been highly successful.
Jamie Beatson excels in not only Breaking-in and Pre-Training, but also Ready to Run preparation with the ability to produce professional, well educated 2 year olds to breeze-up the straight in competitive times.
Last year Jamie Beatson’s draft of 2 year olds consisted of an Exceed and Excel colt who breezed up with the fastest time overall; Exceed and Excel then went on to sell for $430,000.00 at Karaka.
The Complex
Ohukia Lodge is based in Ohaupo and consists of 22 acres of rolling Waikato country, a complex that includes:
Full appointment of covered yards, boxes and day yards.
Two 600m tracks, one in sand and the other in grass - and starting gates
Walker and large sand arena
The facilities are spacious and Jamie has his own 10 horse truck and travels regularly to clients in Cambridge and Te Awamutu courses for ‘breeze-ups’ and on-course education.
About ‘Ohukia Lodge’
Owner of Ohukia Lodge, Jamie Beatson, hails from one of NZ’s most successful and notable equine families, in fact on both sides of his family. The Beatson name is synonymous with racing, several generations in fact involved in the sport in various capacities – owners, trainers, administrators, and successful amateur jockeys of the day and the era.
Jamie’s father, sport horse champion Maurice, is well known in the showjumping world as is his mother Christine, herself a very talented rider. Grandmother Shirley Hyland is well known for her abilities and still instructs dressage at her home in Gisborne.
With all that equestrian lineage it would be inevitable for a young Jamie to pursue a career in the equine world. Showjumping allowed him to travel the world and he spent the greater part of his time in the equestrian world in England and Europe.
When Jamie returned home, he joined forces with his cousin Sam Beatson and they set up a breaking and pre-training property in the Waikato - a successful partnership that spanned eight years. However, these days the cousins trade under their own entities.
