  • Welcome to 'Surf N Turf Racing Stables''Class A' Public Trainer Licence

    The Complex

'Surf N Turf' Racing Stables are based in Foxton, in the central North Island. It is owned and managed by Sue Walsh and Bruce Gregory.

Currently we have 4 horses in work.
The training complex is very well situated, being very close to the racing track itself yet the beach only 10 minutes away. The training options are plentiful.
In terms of the training facilities themselves, they have 11 'walk in, walk out' yards and 16 boxes in a Barn complex (giving total of 27 undercover), set on 10 acres with individual paddocking for each horse.

A lot of repeat owners continue to support the stables but at the same time a few shares in some are often available.

    Stable Stars

    • Exquisite Jewel -  4 wins including the Group 3 Higgins Manawatu Classic $70k, 3rd in the Wellfield Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes and 4th in the Wellfield NZ Oaks.
    • Eternal Angel – winning the 1600m at Woodville recently
    • Sue and Bruce trained jumpers as well as flat horses - and one of the highlights has been Lordace who won 15 races for Sue on 13 different tracks! Two of these were Premier Hurdles and the listed Waikato Hurdles.

    Rehabilitating Horses

As trainers, they say that part of the challenge is the rehabilitation of injured horses and/or those with issues. However, this is something that Sue especially enjoys - meeting those challenges and the ultimate satisfaction of achieving successful outcomes when working with these types of horses. With the beach close by, it proves to be a great option for the therapy as well.

    The Early Years

As a child, Sue Walsh was 'horse crazy'. Her Grandfather was a keen racegoer and encouraged her love and involvement with horse racing.  Sue was based in Christchurch as a teenager and it was at this time she rode work at Riccarton. However, in those days women were not permitted to be jockeys - that did not deter her; she rode in what was then called the ‘Powder Puff’ derbies, horse races for women only riders!

It was in 1977 that Sue was approached by the Canterbury Jockey Club to sign up as an apprentice jockey. Not surprisingly, she took that opportunity and a year later in 1978 she made history as the first female apprentice jockey to ride a winner. That was at Washdyke and within a few weeks of that first win, another win came at the Riccarton racecourse.
Sue at one time was married to high profile NZ jockey David Walsh. During that time, as a trainer, she was known for her great strike rate and back in 1990 they trained Aquidity who ran 6th in that year's Melbourne Cup.

Sue Walsh and Bruce Gregory’s relationship spans 22 years and includes a 10 year stint in Australia. They eventually returned to New Zealand and purchased their Foxton property, setting up as trainers.

Bruce Gregory was formerly an amateur jockey and it was just a couple of years ago that Sue and himself formalised their training partnership and became licenced 'Class A' trainers.
