    'Class A' Public Trainers

    The Complex

The father and son combination of Keith and Brendon Hawtin are Hawtin Racing. A wealth of international experience provided the foundation for them to establish their own training facilities at the Waipa Racing Clubs in Te Awamutu in 2006.   Since then the training partnership have amassed nearly 2 million in stakes monies.

For Brendon, one of the highlights was winning a Group 1 race with Nightlign shortly after gaining his Public Trainers Licence, a particularly memorable win as Nightlign was bred by Brendon’s mother, Lyn.

These days the partnership maintains 27 horses in work at their Te Awamutu complex and facilities that provide barn/box capabilities for up to 35 horses.

“We are lucky to have fantastic owners, some of them have been with us since we first started out; we have had great support from Cambridge Stud and The Oaks Stud as well”

    Striving For Success

Over history a great number of champions and Hall of Famer’s have been trained at Te Awamutu and Brendon’s ambition is to keep turning these out.

The best thing about the course and facilities at the Waipa Racing Club is the relaxing atmosphere, great for a horses mind, while the spacious environment is just perfect for bringing the youngsters through the ranks.

    The Early Years

Keith Hawtin needs little introduction to the racing scene both here and internationally.

As a very young man he commenced his career at Matamata and  later on joined forces with Graeme Rogerson’s stables, spending that time between there NZ base at Tuhikaramea, then heading overseas to manage their facilities in Melbourne, Sydney and Dubai.  This relationship would span 24 years and would include a dual premiership for the Hawtin/Rogerson partnership in 1999/2000 and again in the 2000/2001 racing seasons.

Before joining up with his son Brendon, Keith had by then experienced an international career that few others could boast.

Brendon on the other hand was heading down a similar path – starting out riding work and then preparing yearlings at Highview Stud.  At the young age 18 he left New Zealand for America, where he worked for Ian Cecil for two years before moving on to join New Zealand’s Paddy Busuttin in Singapore.  Brendon then had a stint with the Rogerson’s in Sydney, John Saddlers stables in Dubai and, prior to returning home to New Zealand, he worked for Lloyd Williams in Melbourne.
