"Racing. It's in the blood. I get as much thrill when winning barrier trials as winning races themselves. And I enjoy getting out of bed every morning to work with expensive colts we have, teaching them the 'fundamentals’ of racing and then seeing them go on from there" says Glenn. He has a real passion for the industry.
The Training Complex
These days Glenn trains from his Matamata property located 3 minutes from the Matamata Training Centre.
As well as the facilities on offer at the Matamata training centre, Glenn's 11.5 acre property compliments and shares a 68 acre property that belongs to his Equine Dentist brother. This gives them a great number of options and work surfaces including a 1200m track, plenty of paddocking for agisting and 28 very good boxed yards.
The racing operations carries a constant 18 -24 horses in work, these horses belonging to a small select group of NZ owners. Over and above this, 30 horses are prepped each year. Having been purchased as yearlings, they are groomed and prepared for racing with experience at barrier trials and jump outs before heading off to their Asian clients. Some particularly nice ones have headed there and have been very successful straight off the trials track in New Zealand.
Good loyal owners and a great mix of people have supported the stable since set up 11 years ago. "But we've always got room for new kiwi clients" says Glenn.
"I make trips to Asia every year" explains Glenn. "This ensures that I can catch up personally on all the horses we have prepared for those clients".
Horses To Watch
When asked what horses we could watch and follow, Glenn responded "Well, there are so many young ones coming through, it is difficult to pick one, and certainly there are the few bread and butter ones that keeps us ticking as well".
Best Horse They've Trained
When asked what was the best horse he's ever trained, Glenn had no hesitation in saying:
'Our Famous Eve', a Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed twice Group 1, from only 13 starts
The Early Years
Matamata trainer Glenn Old certainly has an illustrious training pedigree, stemming back to his father who was at one time a hurdle jockey, before turning his hand to training in Matamata. Subsequently his father moved his training base to Melbourne, where he trained for many years.
Consequently, Glenn was used to working in and around the stables and racing was second nature to him. So when his school years finished in Melbourne, he spent the next 7 -8 years working for various trainers before moving to Macau to take up a position as an Assistant Trainer. This training venture was to last eight and half years.
