Class A Trainers License Holder since 1989

    Racing Operations

Gary Vile, or GV as he is mostly known as, has held his Class A trainers licence since 1989.

Success came early for Gary when he turned his hand to training, with Noble Times winning the Matamata Breeders Stake a Group 2 race and then being onsold to America. This really set him alight, as he continued his training career firstly in Taranaki and then later relocating to Manawatu and setting up at the Awapuni Training facility.  The stables at that time trained approximately 15 horses but about 5 years ago he stepped up the pace, moving into a new barn that holds 30 and the stable is going from strength to strength.

Close by the training centre, GV and his partner Vivienne Kaye spell their team on a 15ha block where they live. Currently a new stable block is  being built there. This enables good experience for the horses coming from the racing barn and course environment to the spacious paddocks and new stable boxes on the home farm. Three fulltime staff and two part time complement the daily working operations of the team.

Some very nice types include a 2 year old Tavistock colt, Abbey Road, Anniesstar, and Dragon Beauty will shine once the autumn tracks turn up.  Ransomed who has given the stable some major thrills is currently spelling until the Spring and a number of unnamed 2 year olds are readily available for racing for anyone keen to race one or own one - just get in touch with Gary on the contact details below if that sounds like you!

    The Philosophy

‘The focus to win some very nice races’ is the establishment’s aim.

Gary and the team get a huge thrill out of training winners for good owners; their very loyal clients spanning many years who repeatedly have horses trained with them.

Gary Vile’s core focus is always on NZ racing – extremely passionate about this, however there is also the breeding and trading side of his operations.

    A Bit More About GV

A love of horses is something that Gary Vile says he has had as far back as he can remember. He was always going to be too big for a jockey career so riding trackwork and working in and around every aspect of training racehorses took him through the stables of the successful, well known but now deceased Malcolm Smith.

Later a stint with Syd Brown in Sydney and then with Eric Ropiha back in NZ, his love of horses continued to grow.  A career as a farrier has held him in good stead as these days although hes a full time hands on trainer, GV still does the stable shoeing.  One of the things he enjoys most is doing absolutely everything himself with the thoroughbreds he trains.

     Breeding and Trading Operations

Trading in bloodstock overseas has allowed income which cannot be met here with the current state of the NZ industry. This trading has been an important factor for the operations. The team have concentrated on buying yearlings, whether from the sales or the paddock. In fact, a lot of success has been gained by purchasing straight out of the paddock. No bloodlines are necessarily targeted, but a pedigree of course is important. A good type, able to get up and run early as 2 and 3 year olds is the aim. We are meeting an overseas demand and  successfully meeting all the markets for these types.

Interestingly the stable has had a lot of success with fillies, which is a particularly hard market, however GV has managed some outstanding successes selling fillies to Australia, America, Singapore and Hong Kong. Being able to meet the criteria, repeat sales is the proof that displays the obvious satisfaction from purchasers.

Bucking the trend has been another story of success for the operations, currently expanding their breeding stock, when most of the country are decreasing foaling numbers. As the breeding stock is increased, so is the quality and the long term aim will be to race successfully from his own breeding pool.

Currently 6 mares make up the small venture and are in foal to stallions such as Cape Blanco, Tavistock, Nadeem, Alamosa, Burgundy.
