  • Welcome to 'Matt Cameron - Jockey'NZ’s No.1 Premiership Jockey - two seasons in a row!

Matt Cameron has been  New Zealand's top jockey, having finished second in the 2015/2016 season in the New Zealand Jockey Premiership, for the most wins in a season. He won it for the previous two seasons - and  this says everything about the talented kiwi hoop who is in such demand for his ‘won't give up’ riding attitude, ensuring every horse is ridden out right to the line.
Just 30 years of age, Matt is riding at the top of his game and will surely be vying for the lead again this season.

NZ Jockeys Premiership Winner - Twice!

Having finished second in the 2015/2016 season, Matt has proven his class, ability and determination with clear cut wins in the New Zealand Jockey Premiership in the two previous two seasons:

OVER 50 Group & Listed Races.

His career stats make impressive reading - 58 Group & Listed winners alone and the winner of over $17m in stake money (as of August 2017) and he is only 30 years old!

    "Super Horses"

Matt has a love for 'super horses' like Xtravagant, Hasselhoof, Volk Stok N Barrel, and Who Shot the Barman.

    The Early Years

Prompted by his racing keen grandparents, Matt Cameron started out working in the stables of well known New Plymouth trainer Alan Sharrock - firstly as a 'before and after school job' at the age of 12 until he turned 15 and left school to become fully employed at the stables.

Being a natural light-weight, he was taught to ride on some of the older more experienced horses, eventually expanding to jump outs and trials.  A natural from day one, he progressed rapidly. So it was no surprise that he took out an apprenticeship and actually had his first race day ride just before his 16th birthday
At age 20, with his apprenticeship behind him, he headed for Cambridge to ride for Roger James and Paul Duncan.

In 2007 he rode his first Group 1 winner – the Wellington Cup winner – Willysmith.
A riding stint in Sydney was cut short with the outbreak of equine influenza with Matt returning to New Zealand and setting up his base in Auckland, but travelling to Matamata twice weekly to ride work for Te Akau Racing Stables.
